# Suggesting a next step after an intent

{% hint style="info" %}
This feature is being rolled out progressively. If the **Action** section doesn't appear in your intents yet, contact us at <support@meltingspot.io>.
{% endhint %}

Once a member has viewed an intent's content, the AI Coach can suggest the next step you configured. This lets you guide the member through a sequence: for example, watch a tutorial, then move on to the next feature.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Two-way conversations** must be turned on. Otherwise, this message is shown: "Actions are not triggered while the AI Coach conversation mode is turned off."
{% endhint %}

### Creating an action

1. Open the intent's edit panel from its card's menu, with **Edit intent** (👉 more information [here](/english/coach-ai/configuration/managing-hotspots-and-intents.md#editing-an-intent)).
2. In the **General** tab, find the **Action** section and click **Create action**.
3. Choose the **Action type**, then fill in the fields.

An intent can have **only one action**.

{% hint style="info" %}
The **Action** section only appears for a **published** intent. Publish the intent first.
{% endhint %}

### The three action types

**Custom text**: a paragraph shared with the member, from 3 to 1000 characters.

**Hotspot**: another existing hotspot on the same page. If there isn't one, this message is shown: "No other Hotspot available on the page". The **View hotspot** button lets you find it from the panel.

**URL**: redirects the member to a link. Three fields:

* **Introductory text**: required, 100 characters max.
* **URL**: 500 characters max.
* **Open URL in a new tab**: optional.

Two kinds of URL are available.

* **Static URL**: a full URL (`https://...`) or a relative path starting with `/` (for example `/courses/123`). A relative path keeps the member on the playbook's domain. It always opens in https.
* **Variable URL**: insert variables with the `{..}` button next to the field. Variables are your Spot's custom properties, for example `https://domain.com/{{slug}}`. If your Spot has none, this message is shown: "No variable available on your Spot yet. You can add some by creating a custom property."

### What the member sees

The suggestion appears in one of two places, depending on the content:

* for a content (course, document, etc.): when the member goes back to the conversation after viewing it;
* for a tooltip: right under the card.

The AI Coach introduces the next step with a sentence:

* custom text or URL: "Now that you've viewed the content, I would suggest this for you:";
* hotspot: "Now that you've viewed the content, I would suggest you to go to the next step on the page!"

Then a button is shown:

* **View** (hotspot): the AI Coach presents the next hotspot in the same conversation, with its card.
* **Open** (URL): opens the link, in a new tab if you chose that option.

The **View** link only shows while that hotspot is on the member's page. It disappears once followed.

The suggestion stays in the conversation. It is shown again when the member reopens the conversation from the history, as long as the hotspot is on the page.

### When the action isn't suggested

**The target hotspot was deleted or set back to draft.** The panel shows: "Action is currently unavailable as selected hotspot ... is no longer available. It may have been deleted or saved as a draft. Please select another one."

**The variable URL uses a custom property that no longer exists on the Spot.** The panel shows: "Action is currently unavailable as ... property does not exist on the Spot. Please update URL using valid properties."

**The member has no value for the property used.** The action is simply not suggested to this member. They never get a broken link.

### Action statistics

In the **Statistics** tab of the edit panel, the **Action data** section shows:

* **Reach**: how many times the suggestion was shown.
* **Last activity**: the date of the last activity.

{% hint style="danger" %}
Deleting the action resets its statistics. This can't be undone. Confirm with **Delete anyway**.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.meltingspot.io/english/coach-ai/configuration/suggesting-a-next-step-after-an-intent.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
